“To jazz something up / jazz up something”

Posters with concerts, open-air events and jazz nights are everywhere as “L’Estate Romana” takes off! When the hot daytime temperatures have dropped, Rome at night becomes the perfect setting and atmosphere for listening to music and enjoying the talents of artists. You can soak up the energy of summer!

It is this extra energy which helps us understand this week’s idiom. If you jazz something up you make it more interesting, more exciting, maybe more spicy, more colourful! Have a look at these examples:

  • This dress needs a nice necklace and earrings to jazz it up
  • “What do you think about this sauce – is it ok or do I need to add some more spices to jazz it up?”
  • You can jazz up your living room with some colourful cushions and plants
  • Would you do anything to jazz up your life?

Have a good week,
